What's Inside that Case Henry Opens in the Hit Series?
Throughout a large portion of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max are imprisoned inside a mental fortress constructed from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode has them witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—an event that may just hold the means to overcome him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Mine Shaft
After locating Max in the world called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a chamber that Henry avoids at all costs. An accidental discovery a spyglass pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the true terror lies not within the cave. When she lines up her view with the shape, she and Max suddenly fall into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the trauma involved more than a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
This backstory explains the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a U.S. Navy ship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who returned in a catatonic condition with an different blood composition.
That survivor's offspring, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this phenomenon in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee took experimental components to give to the Communist spies, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. This spy in the mine shaft was that very thief.
So, What's in the Case?
Given what is revealed about the doctor's experiments, the container almost certainly contained some of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would later pass on to the kids Brenner would experiment on.
Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that young Henry ended up in the Abyss, returning hours later as a different person. From then on, he battles the influence of a sinister presence, similar to how Will was possessed by the Mind Flayer in an earlier season.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the encounter was for him. While he controls the army of monsters and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the series is building toward a showdown between him and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to become stronger.
Will's growth has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the ultimate battle ahead.
