This Limited-Edition Pikachu Promo Aims to Curb the Influence Against Resellers

Marking the launch of the fascinating new book Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology, a unique collaboration is underway. Pokémon's creators and London's Natural History Museum are opening a pop-up shop featuring special items. Fans will find offerings including plush toys, art prints, and writing supplies all inspired by the museum's theme. The big draw, however, will be a specially made Pikachu card, offered as a gift with purchase at the pop-up. The store will operate from the physical location to online from January 26 to April 19.

The Book Behind the Partnership

Pokécology: An Illustrated Guide to Pokémon Ecology is a much-awaited volume packed with beautiful illustrations depicting Pokémon in their natural habitats. The concept is the kind of research an in-world scientist might publish once adventurers provide field notes, alternatively a naturalist's journal could have sketched had the famous islands teemed with Pidgeys rather than finches. A key appeal stems from the book's serious approach, presenting Pokémon as a legitimate scientific study. Author Yoshinari Yonehara and artist Chihiro Kinoshita each possess doctorate degrees in ecology and behavioral science.

What Makes This Special Card Different

It is common for The Pokémon Company to release cards celebrating major tournaments or brand collaborations. Many of these promotional cards typically highlight the famous electric rodent that acts as the franchise mascot. The factor setting this new promotion apart is its unusually large size. Although precise specs were not immediately shared, availability is guaranteed to be strictly limited, with fans able to get only a single card per purchase.

Limiting Speculator Activity

According to a company statement, some of the pop-up items will also be sold outside the institution itself. But, a wider release will only be specific stores in the United Kingdom. Critically, fans will not be able to acquire this promo through the official web shop. Although reseller interest is inevitable, the setup suggests they're going to have a difficult time hoarding mass quantities this time around. For those unable to attend, there is the upcoming Pokémon Fossil exhibit headed to Chicago in the coming months.

"Every penny of sales made in the museum store and its online store, which covers Pokémon products, go toward the Natural History Museum’s charitable mission. This includes the research of hundreds of researchers who are conducting studies and finding solutions to the planetary emergency," it notes.
