The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Song
The Mighty Nein, the most recent animated series by Critical Role, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It features our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while also hinting at several agonizing backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's wizard Caleb, and Travis Willingham's warlock orc, the character Fjord.
All in all, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was missing in the music selection.
The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", a truly stellar song created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track originating from the soundtrack album of that title, the second release released by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a wonderful sentimental choice, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will appreciate its presence.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's actual-play adventure. "It's Your Turn", composed by musician the artist, was an instant classic in my view when it was initially unveiled in that year, and it improved further when co-founder Sam Riegel added lyrics to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.
Featuring vocals from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my phone. This track that excites you before you start an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" fails to hit the same chords for me. It's an impressive composition, but based on my understanding of the group, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, the creators has already said that the animated show will have some surprises and variations from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its intro seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the original episodes are available on the audio platform and the video site.
