State Prosecuting Attorneys Charge Suspect in Activist Fatal Shooting with Aggravated Murder

State legal authorities on Tuesday filed charges against Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old alleged of killing far-right activist Charlie Kirk, with first-degree homicide—and announced they will pursue the capital punishment if he is convicted.

Charges and Case Circumstances

Specific accusations brought include premeditated killing, illegal use of a weapon, and witness tampering. Prosecutor Jeff Gray explained that aggravating circumstances included the victim’s political expression and the attendance of minors during the shooting.

“This is not a choice made lightly,” Gray said. “This determination I have made based solely on the facts of the case.”

Investigation Details and Alleged Motive

Investigators allege that Robinson instructed his housemate to erase damaging digital communications and remain silent to authorities. According to reports, Robinson’s parent told law enforcement that her son had become increasingly ideological and had started leaning toward progressive views, including support for gay and trans rights.

Robinson was reportedly in a relationship with his roommate, who was transitioning genders.

Scene of the Killing

Kirk was shot during an event at UVU moments following a comment about transgender individuals and gun violence. Video of the event showed the shooting.

Arrest and Proof

Robinson was taken into custody the following day after people close to him recognized him from suspect photos. He turned himself in with the assistance of a associate who was a law enforcement official.

Prior to his surrender, Robinson apparently confessed to the shooting in a post on the chat platform, writing: “Hey guys, I have bad news, I was responsible on campus yesterday.”

Investigators also reported that DNA matching Robinson was discovered on a cloth placed on the firearm thought to have been used in the shooting. The gun was abandoned near the university.

Communications and Marked Ammunition

Additional evidence included a text message from Robinson to his housemate that stated: “There was the opportunity to take out Charlie Kirk, and I’m going to take it.”

Officials also discovered cartridges with engraved messages such as online phrases, video game terms, and words from an anti-fascist song. A particular inscription said: “NoTices Bulge OWO What’s This?”

Court Process and Detention

Robinson will remain in custody denied bond due to the state’s plan to seek the death penalty. He was scheduled to appear in before a judge for an initial appearance.

The prosecutor referred to the killing as “an American tragedy,” stating that Kirk was murdered while exercising free speech.
