Seattle's Pride Celebrations to Proceed for World Cup In Spite of Formal Protests from Iran and Egypt

Plans for LGBTQ+ rights events and activities in Seattle during the upcoming World Cup will continue unabated, despite Iranian and Egyptian football federations raised strong concerns regarding a planned “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations and City Celebrations

Local organizers stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming in the city center. These events will take place around the Group G match between Egypt and Iran on June 26th. Additionally, FIFA has a policy allowing rainbow flags inside the stadium.

“As the local organising committee, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the city experience beyond Seattle Stadium,” stated a committee representative.

Cultural Context Behind the Objections

Homosexuality is illegal in Iran, and in Egypt, morality laws are frequently employed to target and prosecute LGBTQ+ people. The Egyptian federation stated it did not want to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, the head of Iran's soccer body also raised “its opposition against the issue.”

The Governing Body's Position on Symbols

The international federation holds full authority over match venues on matchdays. Although it prohibits banners and flags with political messages, it permits flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This policy was applied at the previous World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced following reports of flags being seized.

  • This special fixture concept was devised to showcase the city's proud history of championing equality.
  • A design contest has been commissioned to create images celebrating the event.
  • Planners are committed to ensuring all fans are welcomed in the Pacific Northwest throughout the 48-team competition.

The region is home to one of the nation’s largest communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and diverse populations representing all nations. “We’re committed is to ensuring everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” organizers concluded.
