A uniquely yellow-colored residential building in the background helped us locate the footage.
Our team is analyzing images and video posted earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state fatally injured a senior soldier in Moscow.
Russian authorities confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he succumbed to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the Russian capital.
We used panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby residential complex seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the street layout verified the exact location the pictures were captured.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
