During his service on a jury panel in the year 2018, the survivor realized he had to seek legal recourse for his own case after being violated in 2004.

“When I heard the people testifying, I could literally see myself in the identical scenario,” the survivor shared following the relinquishment his right to anonymity.

The assailant violated Dan and caused severe physical damage which caused him being admitted to hospital thrice that season.

Severely shaken, Dan was found a way to transport the assailant back before going back to his mother’s house.

“I lay in bed for an extended period thinking, ‘what took place? what had just gone on?’,” he stated.

During the subsequent September, Dan approached the law enforcement and disclosed the assault.

He explained he had submitted a report at the time, but it was not advanced any beyond because he was “extremely unwell at that time”.

His family members and additional relatives had no idea he was a member of the LGBTQ+ community, he added.

“Times were unlike at that time,” he said.

Currently, Dan works as a managerial professional for the public administration, but he previously worked in a correctional facility, where he said he would often suppress emotions when inmates discussed their own trauma.

He added he was assaulted on the job, which also led to traumatic recollections.

“Later, while serving on the jury. Memories returning to the rape once more. It was a continuous loop that needed to stop,” he said.

The women testifying who helped secure a conviction in the 2018 court case in which he was a panel member were “motivational”, according to Dan.

“It was just remarkable to see them appearing and providing testimony and addressing the tough interrogations being thrown their way,” he said.

“I had been employed at Stansted as an immigration officer at this time, and I had to take a three-week absence due to illness.

“It was then that I re-reported [the attack] to the police and I petitioned to advance the case for me, which they agreed to,” he concluded.

Disturbing Testimony

Law enforcement officers from Norfolk Police were tasked with Dan’s case in the year 2018, and it advanced to a legal proceedings at the crown court in November of 2023.

Through his court submission, Dan detailed how he had been identified with complex post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) connected to the rape.

“I’ve experienced, and presently suffer, recurring contemplations of suicide,” he stated.

One in four of women and about 6% of adult men have been affected by sexual violence, or unsuccessful attacks, as per the national crime survey.

Research conducted found that nearly half of 180 people who were confronted with graphic evidence in trials reported indicators of PTSD.

“Historic incidents, mental health difficulties and immediate stress responses during a trial can worsen psychological responses,” researchers noted.

In 2004, Nicki Duffield approached Gilder when he visited her son in the hospital after Dan had disclosed to her what had happened.

“I felt furious as if ignited within me. I was so angry,” she stated.

The perpetrator departed and it was the last time she saw him.

In conversation with her son, she said: “I felt so proud of you for persisting with what you had faith in and pursuing it to the end. It was rightful vindication. You’d strived intensely.

“Mentally it had deeply affected on you and we could observe how you had difficulties.”

He mentioned his present role as an on-call firefighter for Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service had assisted in the emotional rehabilitation.

“Assisting the public has offered me something to focus on and exist for,” he said.

He explained he now enjoyed his pets, cycling and journeys.

Since May he has initiated production of videos about his experience and posts them on digital networks, where he now has 12,000 followers on the video app.
