Three members of law enforcement perished and more than a dozen additional individuals sustained injuries in a seemingly deliberate blast caused by gas at a rural property in northern Italy.

Sequence of Events

The explosion took place as officers and emergency crews approached the house close to the city of Verona to enforce an eviction order for three siblings in their late 50s and mid-60s.

Each of the three deceased individuals belonged to the Italian military police.

Legal Proceedings

One male and one female got detained at the site and a third person who fled subsequent to the incident was located not long after. The trio have been admitted to medical facility.

The detonation could be audible some 5km (3 miles) away and images from the area showed the building turned into a pile of rubble.

“This moment calls for sorrow,” said Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi, who added that efforts had been made to remove the three siblings in the earlier times.

Financial Context

The president of the region of Veneto, the regional head, explained the farmhouse was subject to an removal notice due to debts accumulated by the siblings.

Conflict resolution experts had been dispatched to engage the family members who had barricaded themselves into the property. When the officers arrived just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities suspect one of the residents caused the explosion.

“Upon entering the house, we were confronted with an act of absolute madness,” regional commander Commander Papagno stated to reporters.

A propane tank had been ignited, and the detonation precisely impacted our officers,” he added.

Incendiary devices were also found at the residence, the interior minister stated.

Impact Assessment

The wounded by the explosion comprised eleven more officers of the police force as well as a trio of personnel of Italy's state police and a fire services member.

Based on information from the Verona prosecutor, the farmhouse was in a poor condition and had lacked electrical service.

The official thought the blast had happened on a level above the entrance and informed the press it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Shortly before the blast, he revealed officers had “heard a whistle, probably the propane tanks being turned on”.

Neighbor Statements

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors told Italian media, mentioning that the trio had in the past stated to “cause an explosion” rather than be evicted.

“The explosion had left a ‘terrible, very painful and dramatic toll’.”

The Defense Minister Minister Crosetto united with other political leaders in honoring the three officers who had been killed in the performance of their duties.
