British authorities has included 11 further countries to its public advisory roster regarding the threats of toxic alcohol contamination from tainted beverages.
The updated advisory covers Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of methanol contamination.
Only recently, authorities had previously included Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, in response to multiple notable incidents including the tragic loss of six visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being advised that even tiny quantities of industrial alcohol can result in blindness or death within twelve to forty-eight hours.
What is Industrial Alcohol and How is it Used?
Industrial alcohol is a harmful industrial alcohol typically employed in antifreeze, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. This substance is not meant for human consumption.
While it is naturally produced during the manufacture of beverages, commercial firms lower it to low, safe levels for ingestion through the distillation process.
But in some countries, it is illegally mixed into beverages to reduce expenses, and as it is tasteless and scentless, it is very difficult to notice.
Government Advice for Tourists
Authorities representative Hamish Falconer emphasized that all travellers should be aware of the signs of industrial alcohol toxicity.
"While having drinks abroad, stick to reputable establishments and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister advised.
"If something seems unusual, like a hangover that's way worse than normal or sight issues – seek medical attention right away."
The complete register of destinations identified as carrying a threat of toxic alcohol contamination now includes: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
