Ben & Jerry's Co-Founder Alleges Unilever Halted Palestine-Themed Frozen Dessert Flavor
The co-founders of the famous frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has claimed how corporate owner the multinational conglomerate prevented the launch for a new Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
The entrepreneur, that established the company alongside Jerry Greenfield, revealed how he plans to independently develop the controversial flavor within a personal series showcasing causes Ben & Jerry's was barred from speaking out about.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators and Parent Company
The recent announcement deepens the ongoing conflict between the world-famous dessert company with its corporate parent, the British consumer goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders maintain how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "fulfilling its ethical commitments".
The Fruit Flavor as an Emblem of Solidarity
The entrepreneur revealed through an Instagram video that he is creating a new watermelon-based sorbet, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm doing what they couldn't,” the founder declared from a cooking set. “I'm making a watermelon-based frozen dessert that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that was done there.”
This particular fruit has become an emblem for solidarity with Palestinians due to its coloration, which match the colors in the Palestinian flag – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
In 2021, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of their merchandise in areas under Israeli control, resulting in Unilever transferring the Israeli operation over to a local licensee, thereby permitting continued sales within disputed territories.
This upcoming dessert series will be developed under Ben's Best, the activist dessert company that originally created several years back for endorsing ex- political contender Bernie Sanders via the product "Bernie's Back".
Leadership Shifts and Future Intentions
Mr. Cohen indicated that he plans to develop additional ice cream flavors focusing on concerns that Ben & Jerry's was prevented from addressing publicly due to Unilever.
This development follows co-founder Mr. Greenfield stepped down from the company in September, after many years with the organization, citing worries regarding how the company's autonomy had been compromised following corporate moves to restrict its social activism.
Previously, Mr. Cohen stated that "Jerry has a really big heart and this conflict with Unilever was breaking it."
“My conscience leads me to continue to work within the organization to advocate for its independence so that the company can fulfill the social mission, the values which it was founded on and has maintained for over 40 years," he explained to media outlets.
