At least 64 Killed in Rio's Largest Law Enforcement Operation on Gangs
At least 64 individuals were killed in a law enforcement action against the criminal organization Comando Vermelho in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the most extensive and fatal action in the area's past.
Four law enforcement personnel lost their lives during the security mission in the Alemão and Penha districts, government representatives stated. More than 80 suspects were detained.
Violent conflicts commenced when around 2,500 security personnel entered the area on the morning of the operation. The criminal organization responded with shooting, igniting obstacles and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials stated.
The UN Human Rights Office said it was "shocked" by the security action, calling for "swift and comprehensive examinations".
Operation Impact
The slum neighborhoods near the city's international airport is seen as the central command of one of Brazil's most powerful criminal organizations.
State officials stated at least 50 of the fatalities were "classified by law enforcement as potential lawbreakers".
Numerous individuals were hurt, including non-combatants affected by the violence.
Community Response
Community members have compared the elevated neighborhood - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
Transport routes stay blocked in the entire neighborhood.
Organized Crime Spread
The Red Command group has been growing their influence in the area, growing illegal substance trade paths and control of the hillside favelas.
Security forces reported in excess of 200kg (441lb) of illegal substances were seized in the operation, along with dozens of firearms.
Raid Preparation
The joint operation by civil and military police follows a year-long investigation.
Dozens of the suspects are believed to be affiliates of a group from the Brazilian state who are at the moment taking refuge in Rio de Janeiro.
